Understanding Espresso’s Family Tree
If you’ve ever looked at a coffee menu and wondered…
“Isn’t a cappuccino just a small latte?”
“What’s a cortado?”
“Does one have more espresso than another?”
You’re definitely not alone.
One of the biggest surprises for new coffee drinkers is realizing that most espresso drinks are built from exactly the same foundation. The difference isn’t usually the coffee itself. It’s the relationship between the espresso and the milk.
Think of it less as four completely different drinks, and more as four different ways to experience the same espresso.
It All Starts with Espresso
Think of espresso as the foundation.
Whether you’re ordering a macchiato, cortado, cappuccino, or latte, you’re usually starting with the same carefully extracted double shot of espresso.
From there, the drink changes primarily based on two things:
- How much steamed milk is added, changing the ratio of milk to espresso
- Whether flavors or other ingredients join the party
Once you understand those two variables, almost every espresso drink starts to make sense.
Meet the Classics
__________
Espresso
At Dynamo, as at most roasters, we serve a doppio (double shot) by default. We serve our espresso alongside sparkling water, a tradition you’ll also notice with our macchiatos and cortados. The bubbles help cleanse your palate so you can experience the coffee with a fresh perspective each sip.
Flavor:
Bold, concentrated, and expressive. Every characteristic of the coffee—from sweetness to acidity to body—is front and center.
Best For:
People who want to experience the coffee itself with nothing getting in the way.
__________
Macchiato
Traditional macchiatos are quite different from what many people first picture. The word macchiato means “marked,” with traditional macchiatos consisting of a double shot of espresso topped with a small dollop of milk foam, just enough to soften the edges.
Flavor:
Still unmistakably espresso, but softened just enough by a small amount of milk to smooth out the edges while letting the coffee remain the star.
Best For:
Espresso lovers—or anyone curious about espresso but wanting just a touch of creaminess.
__________
Cortado
Rising in popularity over the last several years in America, the Cortado is traditionally a 4oz drink featuring equal parts (2oz each) espresso and steamed milk
The cortado is all about balance. The milk softens the espresso without covering it up, making it a great choice if you enjoy tasting the coffee itself while taking away some of its intensity.
Flavor:
Balanced and smooth. Equal parts espresso and steamed milk allow the coffee’s natural flavors to shine while creating a richer, more approachable texture.
Best For:
People who enjoy tasting the coffee itself but want a smoother, less intense experience than straight espresso.
⸻
Cappuccino
The Cappuccino is a classic standard espresso drink, traditionally a 6oz, 2-shot drink (creating a 2:1 ratio of steamed milk and espresso rather than Cortado’s 1:1 ratio). Still a distinctly espresso-forward drink, the Cappuccino provides a bit more to sip on than a Cortado, but without overwhelming the espresso.
Because of the dynamics in steaming a smaller quantity of milk than a latte, cappuccinos will often taste lighter and airier than people might expect in a similar-sized latte while still delivering a bold espresso flavor.
Flavor:
Bold coffee flavor with a light, airy texture. The higher proportion of milk foam gives cappuccinos a creamy mouthfeel without muting the espresso.
Best For:
Those who want a stronger coffee presence than a latte in a smaller form factorbut still appreciate a soft, velvety drink.
⸻
Latte
A latte contains the most steamed milk of the three, and is typically available in a variety of sizes with increasing numbers of espresso shots.
That extra milk creates a smoother, creamier drink while allowing flavors like vanilla, honey, lavender, maple, or chocolate to blend beautifully with the espresso.
It’s also why lattes are often the easiest introduction to espresso for new coffee drinkers.
Flavor:
Smooth, creamy, and mellow. The larger amount of steamed milk creates a gentle coffee experience that pairs beautifully with flavored syrups, honey, or seasonal specials.
Best For:
New espresso drinkers, flavored coffee fans, or anyone looking for a comforting, easy-drinking cup.
⸻
So… Which One Is Stronger?
This surprises a lot of people.
If each drink contains the same number of espresso shots, the caffeine is essentially the same.
What changes is how concentrated the coffee tastes.
A cortado tastes bolder than a cappuccino because there’s less milk.
A latte tastes gentler because there’s more.
Think of it less like adding more coffee…
…and more like turning the volume knob up or down.
Light vs. Dark Espresso
Another question we hear a lot:
“Do you use a light roast or a dark roast?”
Traditionally, espresso has often been associated with darker roasts because they produce rich chocolatey flavors and lower perceived acidity.
But many espresso drinkers also enjoy lighter roasts as espresso. At Dynamo, our Reliant Espresso blend is a light roast with higher acidity and slightly higher caffeine content, along with brighter, fruitier tasting notes.
Because of the brighter acidity and fruitier notes, lighter espresso can highlight fruit, citrus, and floral notes that might otherwise be hidden. You may notice that our seasonal specials featuring flavors in that range will often be paired with our light roast instead of our default dark roast.
Neither is “better.”
They’re simply different ways of showcasing the coffee.
And Then Comes the Fun Part
After you’ve picked your base drink, the possibilities open up.
Different milks (varying cream-levels of standard dairy, as well as non-dairy options like Oat, Almond, Coconut, Soy, even Pistachio).
Different syrups. Honey. Lavender. Maple.
Seasonal specials.
The fun isn’t replacing the coffee.
It’s discovering flavors that complement it.

Remember: The Best Drink Is the One You Enjoy!
One of our favorite things behind the bar is helping someone discover a new favorite drink.
Maybe that’s a cappuccino after years of ordering lattes. Maybe it’s your first cortado. Maybe it’s a seasonal special you never would have tried otherwise.
Coffee doesn’t have to be intimidating. Ask questions. Try something new.
We’ll happily help you find something you’ll love.
